In this article, in simple language, we will learn about the metal structure and its implementation and types, and we will also examine the advantages and disadvantages of using it in construction.

What is a steel structure?

اMost of these structures are made with a type of steel called mild steel, which is very strong. If you attach a circular steel rod with a diameter of 25 mm firmly to the ceiling, you can hang objects like the following weighing 20,000 kg (20 tons) from it:

  • 18 Honda City cars
  • Two and a half African elephant
  • A double-decker bus in the city

We suggest that you definitely try this experiment; Of course, if you are single!

The high strength of steel plays a useful role in the building. Another important feature of steel is its flexibility, which allows it to bend easily without breaking. As a result, when, for example, a storm blows or an earthquake occurs, the building bends to one side. The third feature of this steel is its malleability and softness.

This means that when a strong force is applied to the building, instead of the steel breaking quickly like glass, it just slowly deforms and the building tilts slightly to give the occupants enough time to escape.

These structures do not break suddenly and rarely collapse. Because of these features that have been mentioned so far, steel performs better than any other material during an earthquake in most cases.

But another feature of steel is that if exposed to fire, it loses its strength very quickly. The strength of mild steel is almost halved at 500°C (930°F).

This is what happened to the twin towers of America in 2001. Therefore, steel should be protected from fire and high temperature. For this reason, they usually cover the steel with boards or fire-proof sprayers.

These structures are mostly used in the following cases:

  • Multi-storied buildings : due to strength, light weight and high speed of steel construction
  • Industrial buildings : Because you can create large and spacious structures with little cost
  • Warehouse buildings : for the same reason as before
  • Residential buildings : due to light weight
  • Temporary buildings : because steel forms can be moved very quickly and easily

types of metal structures

There are several types of steel constructions, which we will examine one by one.

Common metal structure

Together, construction team members cut pieces of steel to the right size and then weld them together to make the final structure. This operation requires a lot of labor and it can be done at the construction site, but it is better to do these things in the workshop, which has a better working environment, so that it takes less time.

Spiral metal structure

After preparation and painting, the steel bars are transported to the construction site and connected with screws. This type of manufacturing method is more ideal than the others because the steel bars can be prepared in the workshop with proper machinery, lighting and working environment.

The size of the bars is proportional to the trolley or truck that transports them; The bars should be about 6 meters long for regular trucks or 12 meters for large trailers.

Since at the construction site, it is only necessary to lift the bars with a crane and then connect them with screws, the work goes much faster. Pre-engineered buildings are examples of bolt-on metal structures that the company designs, builds, transports, and finally assembles on site for the building owner.

lightweight metal structure

These are a type of structure that are mostly used for residential and small buildings in North America and parts of Europe. This structure is similar to the structure of wooden formwork, except that instead of two-by-four wooden boards, lightweight steel plates are placed. These thin plates are between 1 and 3 mm thick and can be C or Z bent.

Consider a one-story building measuring 5 x 8 meters. Let’s build it with concrete first. We place four columns in the corner and insert beams between them. Then we cover the roof with a concrete slab with a thickness of 150 mm. Such a building would weigh about 800 kg/m2 or 32 tons (32,000 kg).

Now, if we put steel instead of concrete and put an insulated grooved metal plate on the roof, the weight of the building will be only about 65 kg/m2. The steel building weighs only 6.2 tons (2600 kg). As a result, the concrete structure is 12 times heavier than the metal structure !

Of course, this is only for single-story buildings. This difference is less in multi-story buildings, because the roofs of multi-story buildings are made of concrete slabs for greater economic efficiency. But again, there is a significant difference between a steel building and a concrete building .

Since these structures are very light, they must be firmly connected to the foundation of the building with screws to resist wind forces; Otherwise, the wind will take them away very easily!

Advantages of metal structure

Metal structures have several different advantages:

  • They are assembled very quickly at the construction site, because a lot of work has already been done on their construction in the factory .
  • They are flexible and therefore show good resistance against dynamic forces such as wind and earthquake.
  • Many semi-finished steel corner structures are available in I and C shapes.
  • These structures can be made in any shape and covered with any kind of material.
  • The bars can be connected by various methods such as screws, welding and riveting.

Disadvantages of metal structure

Metal structures have several disadvantages:

  • They lose their strength at high temperature and are sensitive to fire.
  • They wear out gradually in wet or marine environments.
